Stephen is Scientist Emeritus at the NIH, where his research has focused on the development of algorithms and measures for the comparison and analysis of DNA and protein molecules. Most notably, he is the co-author of the BLAST algorithm used for sequence analysis of proteins and nucleotides, which has been cited over 65,000 times.
